Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the ‘traditional’ form of liposuction and when using the term is most generally regarded as the type used. Physicians began using this procedure in the 1970’s and it has been performed successfully and is known as the least invasive form of liposuction. It is most generally used on the face, arms, ankles and neck.

Tumescent Liposuction is a procedure that involves the use of a tube with a saline solution that is injected under the skin to remove fat. The solution firms up the fat and creates a space between the fat and muscle. The solution is the lubricant in the process and consequently less friction. A smaller tube is used which makes the procedure less invasive and faster healing.

Another advantage to this procedure is less swelling than other techniques. Also, there is less bruising and redness which reduces the healing time.

This procedure can be done on an outpatient basis and can even be performed while the patient is standing up depending on the location. A general anesthesia is used and it does not require a hospital stay. There is less risk of complications with this procedure and patients are able to get up and move around very quickly after the surgery. There are very little to no side effects and patients can generally return to work after 1-2 days of rest. A patient can also begin an exercise routine which is recommended after 1-2 weeks. Most patients are not in pain after procedure because there is less tissue damage and the effects of the anesthesia will be in the patient’s system up to 24 hours.

A small incision is used and most generally does not require stitches. The skin is able to heal quickly without scarring.

Patients will see dramatic results almost immediately after the surgery. The most dramatic results will occur within three to four weeks when the puffiness has subsided. After approximately four months, all swelling will be gone.

After the surgery, physicians recommend patients eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. Ideally, the procedure is used as a way to help patients start over with a more contoured sleeker body that they can maintain on their own with a healthy diet and exercise.

Physicians stress that this procedure is not meant to be used as a method of weight loss and repeated on a regular basis. Some people having trouble reducing weight in certain areas no matter how much they exercise. For women, most generally it is the abdomen, arms, neck and legs. Most generally men have difficulty losing weight in their waist and stomach.

If you are considering this procedure, consult your physician and make sure you have enough information regarding the risks involved in the procedure.
